8 Things Homeowners Should Know About Renting a Dumpster

home owner calling to rent a dumpster

Renting a dumpster can be a game-changer for homeowners tackling big projects.

Whether you're renovating, decluttering, or landscaping, having a convenient way to dispose of waste is crucial.

But dumpster rental isn't as straightforward as it may seem.

There are key considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth, cost-effective experience.

In this guide, we'll walk you through eight essential things to know about renting a dumpster.

1. Determining the Right Size

One of the first decisions you'll face is choosing the right dumpster size.

It's a balance between having enough space for your waste and not overpaying for unused capacity.

Sizes typically range from 10 to 40 cubic yards.

A small 10-yard dumpster is suitable for minor projects like a room cleanout, while a 40-yard one fits major renovations.

Estimate your needs based on the project's scope, and when in doubt, it’s better to slightly overestimate.

2. Understanding Rental Periods

Dumpster rental companies offer varying rental periods, typically ranging from a few days to a week. Some offer flexibility with daily extensions.

The length of your rental will impact the cost, so plan accordingly.

If your project is time-sensitive, make sure the rental period aligns with your schedule.

3. Knowing What You Can Dispose Of

Not everything can be thrown into a rental dumpster.

Most companies allow general waste like furniture, construction debris, and yard waste.

However, hazardous materials, electronics, and certain appliances are usually prohibited.

Be clear on what's allowed to avoid extra charges or the hassle of having to separate out prohibited items later.

4. Comparing Costs and Fees

The cost of renting a dumpster varies based on size, rental period, and location.

However, be aware of additional fees. Some companies charge for overage (exceeding weight limits), late returns, or specific types of waste. Get a comprehensive quote to avoid surprises.

5. Location and Placement Tips

Choosing the right spot for your dumpster is crucial. It should be accessible for drop-off and pickup and convenient for your use.

Also, check local regulations or HOA rules about placing dumpsters on the street or in your driveway.

You might need a permit for street placement.

6. Rental Policies and Agreements

Before finalizing your rental, understand the rental agreement's terms.

Look out for details about delivery, pickup, prohibited items, and damage liability.

Clear communication with the rental company can prevent misunderstandings and additional costs.

7. Scheduling and Timeliness

Plan and schedule your dumpster rental in advance, especially during peak seasons like spring and fall.

Consider the delivery and pickup dates in your project timeline to ensure you have the dumpster when you need it most.

8. Maximizing Efficiency

To make the most out of your rental, load the dumpster efficiently.

Start with flat items at the bottom and fill in spaces as you go to maximize space.

Avoid overfilling, as it can lead to additional charges and complications during pickup.

Renting a dumpster doesn’t have to be daunting.

Armed with these eight tips, you can approach your next big home project with confidence.

Remember, proper planning and knowledge are key to a hassle-free dumpster rental experience.

What happens if I keep it longer than the rental period?

We charge a $10/day fee after the initial rental period is over. For those taking advantage of our construction project pricing, the overage feee is $5/day. If you need a dumpster for a bigger construction project or commercial project, we would love to talk.

When should I have my dumpster delivered?

We recommend you have your dumpster delivered the day before you need it for a project.

Not only do we recommend this, but we have built our pricing structure around it. We don’t count the dumpster delivery day or the dumpster pick up day in the rental period.

You can be confident you will be able to use your dumpster for the full 3, 7, or 10 days when you rent from Wise Guys Dumpsters.

Do you offer same day dumpster delivery?

In most cases, we can provide same day delivery. Call us for availability and so we can provide a rush for your order.

We know situations change, or other dumpster companies back out. We are here for you when that occurs. And will do everything we can to get you a dumpster so you can start your project.

We, however, recommend that you plan ahead, if at all possible. Booking your dumpster delivery a day before your project begins will ensure it is available for you to use the moment you're ready to start your project.

As mentioned above, we won't ever penalize you for ordering your dumpster delivery a day before. You will always get the full days for which you booked.

How do I prepare my site for dumpster delivery?

Ensure the area is free from vehicles or other obstacles and is easily accessible for our delivery trucks.

Is there anything I can't put in the dumpster?

Unfortunately, there are a few things that the Denton County landfill won’t allow and a few other things that are allowed but require special care.

Not allowed:

  • No paint
  • No tires
  • No batteries
  • No chemicals
  • No rocks
  • No dirt
  • No concrete
  • No bricks
  • No shingles unless spread out over multiple dumpsters. If you are a roofing company, we can serve you, but please give us a call so we can talk about the best approach for your work site.

Allowed with exceptions:

  • Appliances are allowed, but there is a $10 charge per larger appliance item, such as a refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, etc.
  • Please let us know if you place appliances in the dumpster, and how many, we are required to take those to a different area of the dump when disposing of them.
  • If you are demolishing a brick house, items such as rocks, dirt, concrete, bricks, and shingles, you would be better off with a dump trunk rather than a dumpster.

What should I do if I have paint to dispose of?

If you have paint you need to dispose of, you can put kitty litter in it and once it has dried, your county/city will have a facility that you can take it to.

How much does a dumpster rental cost?

Prices can vary depending on location, length of rental and weight of what you are disposing of but, for most customers, dumpsters start at are $375 for a medium sized (15 Cubic Yard) dumpster and $400 for a large (20 Cubic Yards) dumpster.

What is the difference between a 15 yard and a 20 yard?

They are identical except that the 15 yard is 4 foot tall. The 20 yard is 6 foot tall. All our dumpsters have barn doors that open on the back, so you can completely walk into them, making it easy to load them efficiently.
